Silk & Stem Review: Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Hair Tools Put to the Test

We used Silk & Stem's shampoo, conditioner, hair oil and heat tools for ten weeks across three hair types to see whether the prices and promises hold up.

The hair-care aisle has a special talent for big promises. Shampoos claim to "repair" damage, conditioners "rebuild" strands and oils "restore" shine. In reality, hair is dead fibre: products can smooth, coat and protect it, but they cannot heal it. What they can do is make hair feel better day to day, and that is worth paying for if the price is right.

We looked at Silk & Stem, an online store selling its own range of shampoos, conditioners, oils and styling tools, aimed at people with dry, coloured or heat-styled hair. Over ten weeks, three testers with different hair types (fine and wavy, thick and straight, coarse and curly) used the products and reported back.

What Silk & Stem sells#

Hair care is the core. The Gentle Shampoo ($22), Daily Conditioner ($24), Deep Mask ($34) and Finishing Oil ($28) are the main products. Tools include a boar-bristle brush ($42), a wooden detangling comb ($16) and a ceramic hair dryer ($148). There is a discovery set for $38.

Product pages list full ingredients, including named fragrance components, pH and whether a product is silicone-free. Each also says which hair types it suits.

How we tested#

Each tester used the shampoo, conditioner and oil for ten weeks, and one tester tried the dryer and brushes. We:

  • Rated cleansing, softness and shine weekly on a 1-to-5 scale.

  • Checked colour fade on a tester with coloured hair.

  • Weighed the dryer and timed drying on shoulder-length hair against a $70 dryer.

  • Compared ingredient lists with the marketing claims.

The shampoo and conditioner#

The Gentle Shampoo is sulfate-free, and it does a decent job. It foams lightly, cleans without dryness and left our coloured-hair tester's colour visibly brighter after eight weeks than her usual shampoo. The fine-haired tester found it slightly weighing, and suggested using it only every other wash. It works, though it is not a revelation.

The Daily Conditioner is creamy and detangling, with a pleasant scent. The coarse-haired tester loved it, while the fine-haired tester preferred a lighter formula. The Deep Mask is rich and effective for dry ends, and gave the most noticeable improvement in softness.

The oil and the claims#

The Finishing Oil is a light silicone-and-oil blend that tames frizz nicely. It adds shine and smoothness, but it does not repair anything, whatever the label says. Silk & Stem's product pages contain phrases such as "repairs damage from within", which are more marketing than science. Hair cannot be repaired; it can only be protected and made to look and feel better. The claims are mild by industry standards but still not accurate.

Tools matter as much as products: a good brush and gentle drying do more than any serum.

The tools#

The boar-bristle brush is excellent. It has a solid beechwood handle, dense bristles and a rubber cushion, and it spread natural oils through the hair and left it smoother. It feels like a tool that will last years. The wooden comb is a fine detangler, especially on wet hair.

The ceramic hair dryer is a disappointment at $148. It is quiet and light, but its drying time on shoulder-length hair matched a $70 competitor I used as a control, and the heat control is coarse, with three settings. It looks lovely, and that is about all we can say.

Fragrance#

The scented lines are strong. One tester with a sensitive nose found the shampoo overpowering, and another liked it. A fragrance-free version is available for the shampoo and conditioner, which is a good option, though it is not clearly promoted.

Shipping, service and returns#

Orders shipped within two days and arrived in five. Packaging was recycled and plastic-free, and the dryer was well protected. Support answered a question about which conditioner suits fine hair in a day, with a candid suggestion to skip the Deep Mask.

Unopened items may be returned free within 30 days. Opened hair-care products cannot be returned, which is common but disappointing for a category where fit is personal. Tools carry a one-year warranty.

Price and value#

The shampoo and conditioner at $22 to $24 are competitive with salon brands. The Deep Mask at $34 is decent value. The brush at $42 is a good buy, and the dryer at $148 is not.

Who should buy, and who should skip#

Buy from Silk & Stem if you have dry, coloured or coarse hair and want mild, transparent products and a good brush.

Skip it if you want a miracle repair, need a high-performance dryer or have very fine hair that weighs down easily. If you also care about sleep and your hair, our Silkhaven review covers silk products for the night.

The verdict#

Silk & Stem earns 3.8 out of 5. The everyday products and brush are pleasant and honest, but exaggerated repair claims, a poor-value dryer and no returns on opened items hold it back.
