Linen & Lull Review: Six Months With French Flax Linen Sheets
Linen sheets are famously wrinkly, famously expensive and famously long-lived. We slept on a Linen & Lull set for six months to find out if the fuss is deserved.

Linen has a reputation as the aristocrat of bedding. It is cool in summer, warm in winter, gets softer for years and, in principle, outlasts your mattress. It is also two or three times the price of good cotton, which is a lot of money to spend on a fabric that looks slept-in from the start.
To decide whether that is worth it, I bought a queen set from Linen & Lull in October and slept on it, nightly, until April. The store's claims about quality, fabric origin and trial period were tested alongside the sheets.
What Linen & Lull sells#
The store is focused on bedding: sheet sets, duvet covers, pillowcases, a linen throw and two quilts. Everything is 100 percent European flax linen, in 12 muted colours, at 150 gsm for sheets and 190 gsm for duvet covers. Prices run from $139 for a pair of pillowcases and a fitted sheet to $428 for a full king bundle. Our queen set (fitted sheet, flat sheet and two pillowcases) cost $388.
The product pages state fabric weight, the region where the flax was grown, the mill where it was woven and the finishing method. That last piece of information, stone washing, is important: it is why the sheets feel soft from the first night rather than stiff.
How we tested#
Over six months we:
Slept on the set nightly, through cold weather and a warm week in April.
Washed it 22 times at 40°C, with a gentle detergent and a tumble on low heat.
Tracked softness and pilling by touch and by close inspection under raking light.
Measured shrinkage against the stated dimensions.
Contacted support twice and tried a return during the trial.
Feel, temperature and comfort#
The first night, the sheets felt crisp and slightly textured, more like a well-ironed shirt than a hotel sheet. By the fourth wash, they had softened dramatically, and by the tenth they were the best sheets I have owned. The temperature control is real: I woke less often when it was warm, and in winter the sheets felt insulating rather than clammy.

Durability#
This is where linen justifies itself. After 22 washes, there was no pilling, no thinning, no colour bleeding and only 1.5 percent shrinkage, all within the store's stated tolerance. The seams were straight and the corners of the fitted sheet still gripped a 30 cm mattress. The only change was in the fabric: softer, slightly more relaxed and prettier.
The wrinkle question#
Linen wrinkles. It is worth stating clearly because people buy it expecting crisp lines and find it looks like they have been sleeping in it, which they have. Ironing is possible but pointless. If you like a neat, tight bed, you will not enjoy linen. If you like a relaxed look, it is a virtue.
Shipping, service and returns#
Orders shipped in two business days and arrived within five, in a fabric bag, inside a recycled carton. The sheets came folded with a care card, and washing instructions were clear and simple.
Pre-sale, I asked whether the queen fitted sheet would suit a 35 cm mattress. A reply came in three hours with the pocket depth in centimetres and a note that the sheet would fit up to 40 cm. I returned the pillowcases on night 60 as a test. The 100-night trial applies to full sets and even to used bedding, and the refund arrived in six business days. Returns are free within the trial.
Price and value#
A $388 queen set is expensive. However, if you replace mid-range cotton sheets every two years, at $120 a time, the maths quickly balances. Ours showed no sign of wearing out after six months and 22 washes, and linen typically lasts for a decade or more. If you buy one set and rotate it with a second, the cost per night is remarkably low.
Who should buy, and who should skip#
Buy from Linen & Lull if you sleep hot, prefer natural fibres and want bedding that lasts.
Skip it if you like crisp, smooth sheets, want a low-cost option or dislike a slightly textured feel. Pair a set with a weighted blanket from our Hollow Pine review for a winter combination that works well.
The verdict#
Linen & Lull earns 4.5 out of 5. The linen is beautiful, cool and tough, the fabric details are honest and the 100-night trial removes nearly all risk. Only the price and the unavoidable wrinkles stop it from scoring higher.
